My Life

A detailed Summary of My Life

I am a member of the Wampanoag tribe. We live by the great ocean, near the bays. My people lived good lives until the pale men came to stay. I do not know the whole story because I am only twenty years old. My people encountered some strange people who fished, but none of them stayed or caused us any harm. All our problems started about nineteen years ago. A group of pale men with funny coats, eyes like animals, and light hair arrived here in our land and from that day forward life changed for my people.

When I was a young child a great ship arrived here. The ship was strange, it was longer than the great trees on our land, and had big fluffy sheets on top. Pale men came ashore while some men of my tribe were fishing. The men dropped their things and ran. They came to our village and told the people to hide because of what they had seen. All the women and children hid in the forest. Our chief sent a few men to greet the pale men. While we were hiding, we heard thunder. Night came, one of our men wandered back to our hiding place covered with red water. Everyone cried; I didn't know what was happening. He whispered something to the chief, then closed his eyes and never woke up. I had witnessed the first

Another problem that was even greater arose. A plague struck my people; several of them died. Once that plague left other epidemics came; my people were being wiped out. I fled from the land. When I returned a lot of my people were dead, the pale men had taken over the land. They had cut down trees and built a lot of houses. These people were very wasteful. I helplessly watched them destroy our land. They had claimed all of the land I once called home as their own.

d Thomas Hunt captured some of my people and sold them to pale people to serve as slaves. Later that year a ship crashed; the survivors were taken and made servants in several communities of my people. Shortly after that a ship arrived and men with thunder sticks stole from us and killed some of our people. Neighboring tribes joined us and we drove them out of our land. More pale people came, and built houses and stayed in our land they were peaceful people. They even gave us firewater.

There was one last attempt to get rid of the pale men. All my people, which were weak and few in number, joined forces and tried to drive the pale men away. The plan did not work even more of my people died. We failed.
