My Life

A detailed Summary of My Life

I am a member of the Wampanoag tribe. We live by the great ocean, near the bays. My people lived good lives until the pale men came to stay. I do not know the whole story because I am only twenty years old. My people encountered some strange people who fished, but none of them stayed or caused us any harm. All our problems started about nineteen years ago. A group of pale men with funny coats, eyes like animals, and light hair arrived here in our land and from that day forward life changed for my people.

When I was a young child a great ship arrived here. The ship was strange, it was longer than the great trees on our land, and had big fluffy sheets on top. Pale men came ashore while some men of my tribe were fishing. The men dropped their things and ran. They came to our village and told the people to hide because of what they had seen. All the women and children hid in the forest. Our chief sent a few men to greet the pale men. While we were hiding, we heard thunder. Night came, one of our men wandered back to our hiding place covered with red water. Everyone cried; I didn't know what was happening. He whispered something to the chief, then closed his eyes and never woke up. I had witnessed the first

As time progressed more pale men came. One they called Bartholomew Gosnold came. He stayed at Capawak. He gained the respect of my people and other tribes, but his men stole some canoes and my people and other tribes lost respect for him. Later four of his men were killed, so Gosnold sent another man by the name of Martin Pring to make peace. He gave our people some gifts, but since my people nor his people really trusted each other they left. Later another group came; a man named Sammuel de Champlain led them. His men arrived in Patuxet, which the pale men called Plymouth about two or three years later. The pale men stole from my people again, so one of Champlain's men was killed. Although my people apologized, the pale men left again. Other pale men came and left because of similar incidents. A man who was called Captain John Smith came to make a map of the area. He did not cause us any harm. After he went back across the great ocean, one of his companions name!

Now there are not many of us left. We can not rebel, so we have to leave or coexist with the pale men. I don't know what to do. If I leave the pale men will probably move further inland and destroy my new home. My life and the culture of my people have been destroyed. There is no hope for us. Who knows what lies ahead? We may even be wiped from the face of the earth.

Another problem that was even greater arose. A plague struck my people; several of them died. Once that plague left other epidemics came; my people were being wiped out. I fled from
