Cathcher in the Rye
In the award winning novel, The Catcher In The Rye, author J. D. Salinger shows the phoniness of 1950’s society through the character of a young boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden Caulfield is an intelligent and bright, sixteen year old boy who attends Pency Prepatory School. However due to his troubled mind and overall character he fails out of school and begins to wander the streets of New York. Through Holden’s wanderings, Salinger shows his readers the phoniness of society, such as educational institutions, Hollywood, and Catholicism. Furthermore even though Salinger uses his novel to show the phoniness of 1950’s society, he can also very well use his novel to illustrate the phoniness of today’s society.Through J. D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher In The Rye, you can note the phoniness of educational institutions in the 1950’s society and relate it to today’s schools and universities.
