Friar Laurence

The functions of Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare's story Romeo and Juliet is certainly one of the most known and appreciated classics of all times. Almost everyone who went to school has already heard about this story of two teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, that fall in a powerful love. But, their love is an impossible love because their families, the Montague and the Capulet, are great enemies. Romeo sees Juliet for the first time in a supper at Capulet`s house. They immediately fall in love and they decide to get married in secret by Friar Laurence. The problems begin when the cousin of Juliet, Tybalt, kill Mercutio, a friend of Romeo. Romeo then kill Tybalt and he is banish from the town. Juliet is then force to married Paris but just before, with the help of Friar Laurence, they try a plan to escape this marriage by giving her a distilling liquor drink to fake her death during twenty-four hours. The plan is to escape with Romeo but it do not work because Friar Laurence is unable to send his letter to!

Romeo. Romeo and Juliet finally commit suicide for each other at the end.

At first, we can think that Friar Laurence has a secondary role in the story. But, in analysing more only his character and


Doth my name lodge? Tell me, that I may sack

And slay thy lady, that in thy life lives,

Within this three hours will fair Juliet wake.

And hither shall he come, and he and I

Among a sisterhood of holy nuns.

Shall keep his native progress, but surcrease.

the right choice for them: " So smile the heavens upon this holy act, / That after-hours with sorrow chide us not" (3.1. 1-2). He also give advice on love to Romeo:

He says to Juliet to come away, to come with him. Her husband is dead and Paris too, and Friar Laurence do not seem to take in consideration that she is probably in distress and that she can commit suicide at anytime. He tells her to come and he decide to leaves. He did an error by leaving because she stabs herself just after. Friar Laurence is responsible of Juliet's death because he could have save her before she commits suicide for Romeo.

At this time, Friar Laurence thinks that his plan will work for sure. Romeo will receive his letter and he will come with him when Juliet will awake. Juliet is also very confident about the idea of Friar Laurence. "Love give me strength, and strength shall help afford. / Farewell, dear father (4.1. 125-126).

And in their triumph die like fire and powder,

Thy husband in thy bosom there lies dead,

O Juliet, I already know thy grief;

Tomorrow night look that thou lie alone;

This is dear mercy, and thou seest it not (3.3. 24-28).
