TV SHOWS: Marriage & Family

Many tv shows today show marriage and family as a humorous situation, embarking comedy mishaps and unhappy marriages. One such show that shows a light view of marriage and family is the ever popular series, and one of my personal favorite shows, "Friends." Anyone who watches the show definitely knows about Ross' infamous 3 divorces. Today, I am going to focus on the episode of Ross' 3rd divorce, and it's relation to Familiaris Consortio and my life.

In this season premier episode Ross and Rachel, who have been long-time lovers, as well as the rest of their group - Chandler and Monica (who are a couple), Phoebe (the "crazy" friend), and Joey (a failed actor) - all decide to go to Las Vegas on vacation. Chandler & Monica who love each other dearly suddenly decide to get married in a chapel around the corner. They frantically search for traditional wedding needs - "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." Ross and Rachel, meanwhile sit in their hotel room getting drunk and rekindling their old romance. When they finally decide to get out of the room, they are completely inebriated and in the mood to do just about everything. While they party around the town, Chandler and Monica prepare for their soo

This show was definitely one of the funnier episodes of Friends. The sanctity of marriage however, is completely thrown away by the spontaneity of their decisions, the mishap of Ross' 3rd marriage, and the ridiculousness of drinking and doing unbelievable things. This being Ross' 3rd marriage is definitely one of the funnier plots of the following episodes. But in this episode it is one of seriousness and upset. Ross and Rachel themselves cannot believe, and do not even remember that they got married. But in many ways, this show is somewhat ridiculing the whole romance with Las Vegas chapel marriages. How could any chapel allow 2 drunk individuals to get married in the condition that they were in?

n-to-be marriage. Finally, when Monica and Chandler arrive at the chapel, they are stopped by the receptionist who tells them that the wait is just another few minutes while another couple gets marri!

The Catholic Church, as I know it, frowns down on divorce, but in the worst possible situation an annulment is offered. The idea of Ross' 3 marriages, and soon to be 3 divorces, is definitely not the idea of a Christian Marriage. He has a child with the woman in his first marriage, and that, too is not the idea of a Christian Family.

Chandler and Monica had a good relationship going on. They were very good friends before they knew one another and decided on a whim to get
