Ethnic/Racial group representation in News Media

Today more than ever, news media is an important tool in society since many people¯s opinions and mindsets are formed based on what they receive from the news media. Therefore, ethnic/racial group representation is an important feature of the news media because it can affect the way that certain groups are perceived. This is the overall purpose of this study, to investigate ethnic/racial group representation in the news media. We intend to determine whether or not groups are under or over-represented. Furthermore, what are the implications? For example, are stereotypes further justified or disproved as a result of the representation? We also seek to determine the role of journalists/newscasters in media representation, how are they represented? Additionally, we intend to find out what certain characteristics of the news suggest about representation. For example, is there a relationship between the locations of a story with the specific group being represented, as well as whe!

ther the study was positively or negatively portrayed? Also, are minorities over-represented in relation to stories involving crime?

To begin our study, we discuss what other experiments and literature have found in related studies. We then

It is hoped tat future studies, as well as the study that we successfully conducted, will be used as an argument against media misuse. They can further support the reasoning that states that news media should have adequate reporter representation and story coverage according to the percent-wise makeup of racial and ethnic groups in a particular community.

From the afore mentioned observations, we could confidently conclude that our hypothesis was correct in that negative overrepresentations of minorities and positive overrepresentations of Caucasions in the news media do create, maintain and reinforce stereotypes. Furthermore, we found that negative perceptions provided by news media of the criminality of minorities, particularly African-Americans and Latinos, are not congruent with actual national percentages.

introduce the methods used for our study. Examples of the charts that were used to record and code the observations are also included. This includes the procedure to determine results and how the procedure and results were measured. Next, we talk about the results/findings, using tables that are based on our measurements. Lastly, we provide a discussion of the results, relating them to the implications they might involve and provide suggestions for further investigation of the issue. The purpose of this study is to give insight into the field of research that covers ethnic/racial group representation. Once valid, conclusive evidence is contributed to the issue, suggestions and eventual implementations of representation reform in the news media can be developed.

From the 56 news stories that were accounted for, we were able to make several observations with regards to our hypothesis. First of all, the vast majority of negative or criminalistic news stories presented involved an African-American, most commonly male. Additionally, these news stories were most often centered on theft/robbery, family disfunctionality or community deterioration, and violent crime. Further, the possibility for presentation bias was noted because those reporting were largely Caucasian.

Additional studies could link the reinforced stereotypes to self-esteem issues among minorities, an increased level of insecurity among [inner-city] residents due to improper crime coverage, and coverage affect on minority
