"We are always getting ready to live, but never living." Is a wise quote by the famous writer Ralph Waldo Emerson. In the novel The Pigman by Paul Zindel, he deals with the importance of enjoying one's life despite difficult circumstances. Mr. Zindel proves his point by introducing Mr. Pignati or the Pigman, Lorraine's Mom, and John's Father. Each character has their own individual obstacles that prevent them from being happy. Mr. Pignati or the Pigman, in a confusing way, does and does not enjoy living life. In the beginning of the book, the Pigman is in denial that his wife is dead because he loved her so much and she meant so much to him. Infact, he claimed she went to California to visit his sister, because he could not accept the fact that she had died. It was almost like he closed the door to the universe and had no purpose to live. Without his wife Mr. Pignati was amazingly lonely until he began going to the zoo everyday to see Bobo the baboon. Bobo is Mr. Pignati's best friend and is always happy to see Mr. Pignati because he feeds him lots of peanuts. The Pigman feels as if Bobo is the only person that has time to listen to him since no one else ever talks to him. The first time the Pigman introduced Bobo to John and L
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mr. Zindel shows us that you should take advantage of living life to its fullest because life is not everlasting, it does not go on forever. For example, people like Lorraine's mom and John's father need to get out and take advantage of what is in the world and enjoy themselves while they have a chance because before they know it their lives our going to be over. John's father, as Lorraine's mother, does not fully enjoy living his life, but for different reasons. First of all, he believes the only thing in life worth doing is working hard, and therefore, he yells at his youngest son John for spending time with his friends and having leisure interests. "I was thinking maybe you'd like to work with me over at the Exchange a few days a week. Just after school?...It'd be better than the way you waste all your time now. After all, what are you going to be in life?" (58) As its states in the quote John's father works over at the Exchange, the only problem is he works too hard and consequently, when he comes home, he is always too tired to do anything but eat dinner. "He's almost sixty years old, and I know he's not going to be around much longer. All the guys at the Exchange drop dead of heart attacks." (58) John's father is a very stressful man. He is only in a good mood when he makes a lot of money. "Bore has a seat on the Coffee Exchange, a! t. The additional care is for his collection of pigs. Mr. Pignati's house has an entire room full of pigs, not real pigs, but, glass, marble, and even clay pigs. The pigs were made in many different places, such as Japan, Germany, Austria, Sw
