"Ouch! That's hot!" is what a little boy would say when he takes a cookie off a hot oven pan. His hands will blister and hurt, but he will never grab the cookie off the pan again. Life is all about learning form experiences. The Joy luck club by Amy tan, is about 4 mother's and their daughters and each ones cycling from purity to soiling back to cleansing again. As the mother's travel from Asia to America, they encounter" unspeakable" tragedies in which they learn life lesson's from. Each mother hoping to teach their daughters lessons that she has learn so that her daughter does not have to experience tragedy first hand Lindo is one of the mother that experience an unhappy arranged marriage. Lindo's life is a cycle of the lost of her innocence and how she gained strength through a tragedy.
When a baby is born he is pure and innocent, not knowing what is right and wrong. Lindo's innocence and purity prevented her from seeing the harsh truth about her life. When Lindo was four years old she was arranged to be married to the wealthy neighbor's son. Arrange marriages were traditional in little towns, and it was an honor to marry into a higher class. Lindo's mother in law was very superstitions, so Lindo use superstition to escape from her marriage by telling the Huang's false stories of a curse that was put on the house hold. Lindo escaped from a harsh and unhappy marriage. Lindo was told "never tell anybody of any importance about the story of (her) doomed marriage." Lindo had gained her freedom that she had deserved. Her first marriage opened her eyes to the truth that her innocents blocked her from seeing about her life.
Lindo's experience with a tragic marriage helps her becomes the strong, confident, and free spirited woman she is today. The day of her weeding Lindo promise herself that she "would never forget (herself)." Lindo was tired of being pushed around like one of the servants. Lindo promised herself that she would remember who she was and her ancestry. Lindo's new self-confidences helped her survive the cruel marriage and find an escape from it with this new self confident she also grew stronger mentally and physically. Lindo became " strong as a horse" as she worked with the servants determine to please her mother in law. Under the entire obedient daughter act Lindo "was strong. (She) was pure. (She) had genuine thoughts inside that no one could see, that no one could ever take away from me." Lindo was physically strong from all the harsh work she did which helped her survive when she left the Huang's household. Mentally she knew that she was unbreakable. She knew that she had not!
