underage drinking
I wake up on the couch with an empty feeling in my stomach. "Who kicked me in the stomach, and how the hell did I end up here," I remark to myself. Then I recall the beginning of last night, the partying, the dancing, and most of all the drinking. How much had I actually consumed? I lost count some where between margarita time and beer-thirty. As I wipe the sleep from my fuzzy eyes I notice an empty bottle of Smirnoff Vodka and a pool of vomit on the floor beside the couch. "Oh God, what happened," I shuddered at the grim fact that I had vomited at some point in my all-to-peaceful slumber of the night before. This ran a chill down my spine. I could have easily ended up like countless other college students and rock stars who have died of asphyxiation on their own vomit, after a night of "fun." Why do I put myself though this every weekend? I have no real explanation. Is one night of "fun" worth an eternal sleep? However, this scene is not uncommon among the youth of America today. Heavy drinking is especially common among college students. "Drinking plays a definite, in fact almost a primary role in the social life of some students in college" (1 maddox 185). This should not be the case, but
This is exactly the type of thinking we will have to erase from our culture if we want to eliminate alcoholism. The movie industry also needs to reform their techniques. Stop portraying the hero as a beer-swilling party animal with all the ladies. Then and only then will we be able to reform our next generation of potential alcoholics. Beer and Liquor are often the drug of choice among the youth of America. This is mainly because it is relatively cheap and easily obtained. Alcohol's wide social acceptance in America as a "safe drug" is another factor that leads teens to begin drinking. Would you rather see your son or daughter high on crack or drunk from a night of socializing with her friends? At first glance you may want to choose the latter, but the answer is neither. Both crack-cocaine and alcoholic beverages are highly addictive and end up ruining families and relationships in the long run. Society accepts alcohol because it is legal and because most of society is addicted to alcohol in some form as well. They seem to be leading normal lives. So what harm can it be? The answer is--a multitude of harm. Just because something is legal does not mean it is safe to abuse. You certainly would not get this idea from watching American television or by reading our popular magazines. The temptation to try alcohol is often more than most people can handle. No one wants to look like a wimp around his or her friends. The fact is that if everyone jumped off of a bridge you probably would too, especially if they told you they were having fun while they were doing it. This is exactly what you are doing when you abuse alcohol. Your life as well as your liver will be destroyed if you choose to let the "liquid devil" control your life. New Jersey: Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies, 1964. it often is. These young adults are own their own and experiencing new and different things for the first time in their lives. It is only natural for them to experiment with drugs, sex, and alcoholic beverages.
