Israeli History

A detailed Summary of Israeli History

The country of Israel became a nation in 1312 B.C.E.. Since the Jewish conquest in 1272 B.C.E., the Jews have had dominion over the land for one thousand years with a continuous presence in the land for the past 3,300 years. The land of Jerusalem is of great importance to the Israeli people, and has been for centuries. It is mentioned in the Tanach, the Jewish Holy Scriptures, over seven hundred times. King David, one of the great leaders in Israeli history, founded the city of Jerusalem.

The issue of Arab refugees has been one of great concern. By giving the Israeli people ownership of land inhabited by Arab people, the problem of displaced people arises. Jewish refugees were completely absorbed

The Jewish people received large amounts of financial and military support form western governments. They also benefited from their highly motivated and trained citizens who were committed to the creation of a unique nation-state.

The United Nations offered the Zionists 50% of Palestine for purchase. Despite their disappointment at the exclusion of Jerusalem from the purchase, they agreed. However, portions of the land included in the purchase were among the most fertile in all of Palestine. It included lucrative citrus groves upon which many Arabs depended for a living. Despite these concerns, the purchase was approved. This may have been a result of the sympathy many of the world's nations felt toward the Jewish people following the Holocaust. Many believe it was these feelings of sympathy that initially pressured the United Nations to establish an Israeli nation.
