The Internet is a world-wide network of computers which can be accessed from any PC (with the necessary hardware / software) for the cost of a local phone call. You can exchange information with millions of other people.

It first began as the ARPANET during the cold war in 1969, it was developed by the U.S Department of Defenses's (DOD) in conjunction with a number of military contractors and universities to explore the possibility of a communication network that could survive a nuclear attack. It continued
