Throughout the course of the story, Gatsby finally manages to attain Daisy. The only problem is that the reality can never live up to the ideal, which would have left Gatsby confused and unsure of his next move, had he lived long enough to really understand the truth. The irony lies in the fact that Gatsby is so passionate about this wholesome ideal that he stoops to gambling and bootlegging to achieve it.
