Weapons of Mass Destruction

"They stand ready to enter any dangerous situation to do their part defending the nation. They work with civilian agencies, but the Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams are..... The milatay's first responders."

There are currently twenty seven Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams in the United States. The Federal goverment will train, equip and develop a doctrine for the teams. The governors of the twenty six host states will have control over theses twenty seven teams unless federalized. The first ten teams should have finished training in April of 2000. They are in Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, California, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington. The new teams will be based in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisana, Main, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohiho, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Virginia between March and July of 2001. The teams have twenty two full time members of the the Army of Air National Guard. All of the members of the teams must have technical expertise to identify chemical or biological agents that may be used in a terrorist attack.

The bombing in Oklahoma City woke America up. The horrible deaths of 168 children, women, and men made us face up to the increasing danger of terrorists possessing weapons of mass destruction. There can be terrorist attaches involving nuclear, chemical or biological. Over the past five years the United States has faced increasing terrorists possessing weapons of mass destruction and this increases the danger to our country on our own soil. Iraq and the Soviet Union have chemical and biological weapons arsenals, this is a true wake up call to each of our country and us. Pam Berkowsky, Defense Secretary William S. Cohen's assistant for civil support, says the American public is beginning to hear. "Looking at history, there is no weapon that has ever been developed that man has failed to use," Berkowsky said. Berkowsky is the Pentagon's civil support liaison to the National Security Council. In the past year Berkowsky said that there has been 200 threats involving chemica!

Thomas K. Longstreth is the Deputy Secretary. He was appointed in November of 1998. He holds a very large responsibility in this job. He advises almost all the men and women in charge of defending against any threats that we the U.S. might incounter. He has worked for NATO in Europ
