Biological Disaster

Picture that there are two people who decide to have a child. They discussed and settled upon allowing nature to decide how their child will turn out. Time passed and once again they wanted another child, but this time they choose to let science do the deciding. They scheduled an appointment with a doctor to decide on characteristics such as hair and eye color, intelligence, height, and sex. As more time passed the natural born child was more and more an example to the family as to what science had done for their second child. Child number two grew much faster, was physically stronger, and excelled more rapidly in school, in comparison to their first born. As a result of this advancement, the father began to take a special interest in the younger child and soon began ignoring the other child. The older child had a special interest in becoming an astronaut, but because he had a heart problem and lacked the estimate of long life, he was never permitted to pursue his dream!

s. Society did not want a liability in work and choose not to take a chance on someone that might not work out intellectually or physically. No matter how much he studied or how much he trained, he was not accepted by the overwhelming society of people

Through genetic engineering society develops a chance to achieve wonders in the medical field. Just the other day a show on television was presenting medical miracles. Which showed that today in 2000 we are able to do such things as brain surgery on a baby still in the mother's womb, rid a person of a 300 pound tumor, retract a foot long knife that was gouged into the brain and through the jawbone, and grant a person that had lost their hearing at age 3 the gift to hear again at age 20. Science may grant a world of filled with more intelligent, healthy, and attractive people. This may even allow for less discrimination if everyone turns out looking "perfect." DNA manipulation increases the chance of discovering vaccines for diseases previously uncured. If gene therepy would also open the doors that could rid people of psychological disorders forever. This would help society with the possibility of less crime and once again less discrimination against those who would hav!

ditions are equally applied to all persons enrolled in the plan (White, Callif-Daley, and Donnelly 2). Genetic discrimination may also be experienced in the workplace as well (White, Callif-Daley, and Donnelly 3). How will society be balanced with employment? Will people evolve to such lengths that nobody wants to flip burgers or work as a garbage man? Will they be forced into a specific job at birth due to their genetic makeup showing an undesirable future?

Since the science of genetic engineering is so new, people can't be 100 percent sure about what type of situations they are creating. When we alter someone's genetic code, there is a chance that a mutation may develop. Of the readers polled in Time Life magazine, 76 percent approved of discovering whether their child would have a disease or disability (Public Concerns 1). If someone is displeased with the end result of their "product," do they have the right to throw it out? Suppose the unhappy new parents decide to throw it out, wouldn't religious groups think of it as playing God? Deifying rules that some feel should be left to the power of Mother Nature. This would create the manifest destiny of a future with more crime and maybe even repeating history with religious crusades on what is right and wrong.

most destructive creation in our history, the atomic bomb!

The word "family" today has become a term which people use very loosely. These days there are children having children, single parenting, and even gay and lesbian adoptions. As a result of this, society is experiencing parts more parts of chaos with children than ever before. People aren't being given a strong foundation that
