In Arthur Miller's historically-based play, The Crucible, a town is torn apart over the issue of witchcraft. Suspicion of "demonic influences" arise when Reverend Parris discovers his daughter, Betty, with a number of other girls dancing naked in the woods. Abigail Williams, one of the girls, claimed that they were simply dancing. However, many of the adults failed to believe her; they were convinced the girl's behavior had to do with witchcraft.
