Bartelby, the Scrivener
The story is a humorous commentary on industrial society. The author, Herman Melville uses the habits of the characters in the story to illustrate themes. The story is a particularly commentary on the modern office atmosphere and how it effected by the differ employees. The author try to make a statement by this story about the relationship between employee and employer, and how the industrial mechanical work, the routinely work made those relationships stressed out. He uses many different methods by which to display this process of removal of humanity from the workplace. The most important of these are his use of the scenery, his description of the type of labor performed, and the personalities of his characters. By imagery of the office setting he is presenting us the picture of industriousness on one face while displaying the detrimental effects of this newfound growth on the other. The author also tries to illustrate the difficult in finding good workers, or inhumane work that was the cause for low productivity among the workers. One theme in the story shows how the nature of work in the industrial society clashes with the ways that people work. The forms of resistance to this mechanical work the each character gives further this theme. A second theme is the anticipates of the future, the author use a person who works as a scrivener, he use the copy and routine job of the main character to tell us that many jobs in the marketplace will became mechanization and dehumanization. In the end Bartelby wanted his life to go on without taking any changes. He was afraid from changing himself because he was always the same, just like the copy machine, always the same as the original. Bartelby died preferring not to live in any differ way. The workers show resistance toward their work, Bartelby was never a man of emotion or invention. Bartelby had the habit of starring blankly out the window on to the blank brick wall.
