Though Candide by Voltaire is set during the 1760's and Jailbird by Kurt Vonnegut is set during the 1970's, many parallels still exist between the two. The two societies are still very similar. The characters in both books though they encounter very different physical hardships, the mental hardships and motives are similar. Candide and Walter F. Starbuck lived in completely different times many parallels exist between their lives. Thus, even though the two societies have over two hundred between them they are still very similar; hence, they have not changed much over time. And they will, more than likely, remain the same as long as man is on the face of this planet. For, all the technology the world has provided has not yet changed the goals of men; it has simply given men alternate ways to achieve the same motives. Thus, society has not changed at the roots, and men will always thirst for money and wealth and look to find the easiest way out of problems or to simply b!

Al Capone, the famous Chicago gangster, thought Sacco and Vanzetti should have been executed. He, too, believed that they were enemies of the American way of thinking about America. He was offended by how ungrateful these fellow Italian immigrants were (Jailbird p. 236.)

In Candide a similar happening occurred with an "auto-da-fe".

No matter how much technology changes, society stays relatively the same at heart because of lust and greed inherent in people. Man was doomed to squabble over wealth and power and to pass blame on to others the second that God banished Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. Adam blamed eve, and eve blamed the serpent for their ejection from the Eden. The serpent had convinced Eve to eat of the fruits of the garden in order to gain knowledge. Hence, it was lust of knowledge that caused Adam and Eve their downfall. Martin of Candide and Ruth of Jailbird have the right interpretation on society. "The most intelligent human beings were so stupid that they could only make things worse by speaking their minds (Jailbird p. 209.)" People are too corrupt, for the pessimistic are dead on when it comes to society.

People wanted her hand because that was how she conducted her business. She would put her fingerprints on business documents to verify them, for she was in hiding and would not come out to conduct her business. However, we continue to call this modern society civilized.
