This play is about Willy Loman, a man lost in the past and still hoping and dreaming for things that will never come true. His dreams for his sons Biff and Hap never seem to come true but throughout the play he believes in the possibility that one day they will. Willy Loman and his family are not the perfect family by any means. Willy is a hard worker, but, unfortunately, he does not get paid well at all. He goes to his friend Charlie's office to get fifty dollars from him so that he can come home with some money in his hand to give to Linda, his wife.

Willy does not treat his wife like a wife should be treated. Linda is always the last one to speak, if she gets the chance to speak at all. He also has an affair on her; when he goes on sales trips he meets a woman, until Biff eventually catches him. After that Biff has a new meaning of life and has lost respect for his father. Perhaps Willy had this affair on Linda because she failed to recognize how much help he was trying to seek. Every time Willy tried to kill himself, Linda would keep quiet about it.
His family is not a great family by any means. They are not happy and they do not treat one another very well. None of them recognize the difference between reality and illusion, especially Willy. Willy can't understand who he is and who his sons
