I always knew slavery was a terrible thing but after reading their two works I have a better understanding of how everyday life was for a slave. Frederick Douglass's Narrative of an American slave gives great detail about a slave life and when reading Huckleberry Finn you can see some of the same feelings and concepts about slavery.

In both works we see that slaves are thought of as nothing but a piece of property. They are treated no differently than a horse or ox. They are bought and sold without question and beaten whenever they do something wrong. In Frederick's Narrative of an American slave, the slaves are sometime beaten just to make an example out of them and to put fear in the other slaves. In Frederick's work we see that some masters were even proud to be known as being being a "nigger beater". One man had such a reputation for breaking slaves that other masters would pay him to train their slaves for one full year. The slaves were beaten for such things as not lowering their head when their master came in, not saying yes sir or maam, and breaking tools by accident. When the slaves were beat it was not just a slap on the wrist; the master would tie their hands over their heads and whip them with a cowhide unti

Education of any kind was also prohibited. The slave in the story was being thought to read by his mistress and when the master heard of it he forbid her to do it again. The master said "give a nigger an inch and he will take a ell" this term was used in both stories. Frederick's story does show the slaves thirst for knowledge. After he had gotten some learning from his mistress he did not stop trying to learn to read and he thought himself. Both works show that most people didn't think anything was wrong with having slaves. Even in Huckleberry Finn, Huck thought he was going to hell for helping a slave escape. Even the slaves accepted slavery, they didn't like it but they accepted it because they had not other choice.

ouldn't beat them anymore, then they would allow them to be tied their for hours after they beat them. There was no difference in gender when it came to beatings; the female slaves got great just as have as the nest slave. In Frederick work we even see that the master would barely give the slaves enough to eat, most of the time they had to beg and steal from neighbors. In Frederick and Clemens work it did give examples of some slaves being treated decent. They had enough food to eat and di
