Why did the British and French bring the Israelis into the Suez Crisis?

During 1956 Nasser Gamal, the great people's leader of Egypt plan for improving living standards in Egypt by constructing the Aswan dam. This plan was rejected by the US led World Bank because it breached their own interest in the area. Therefore, president Nasser took the Suez Canal from the Anglo-French company to fund for this great project. The nationalization of the Suez Canal by the Egyptian government in 1956 symbolized the up lifting of the facade to nearly a century of western oppression, humiliation, extortion and exploitation in the land of the Great Pyramids.

On 26 July 1956, President Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal. Hitherto, the defense of the canal had been Britain's responsibility. The British Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, was outraged by Nasser's move as the Canal holds such vital importance f


The devised Sinai campaign started when a regiment of Israeli paratroopers dropped into Mitla pass on 29 October 1956. This invasion of Israeli troops into the Sinai desert of Egypt to cut of defense around the canal area is only the first of the three phases of attack that was planed. At the same time an Infantry Brigade of 1 800 moved to attack the Egyptian Fort at Sharm El-Sheikh. Next, the Israelis cleared all resistance from Gaza by forcing the Egyptian Governor to surrender on November 2. The whole campaign was over within 100 hours.

President Eisenhower condemned the Israeli action but also pointed out that it 'will refrain form censuring the Israeli action if Israel declared that the purpose of the attack into Sinai was not territorial expansion'. Then Soviet Union made a decisive announcement that it was in possession of ballistic missiles 'capable of reaching any point on the globe'.
