Creation vs. Evolution
There is one single question that boggles the minds of even some of the top philosophers in the world. The odd thing is that this question is seemingly one of the simplest questions ever asked, "Where did life come from?" Intelligent design has been widely debated through recent years. Charles Darwin had much to do with these debates by coming up with an antithesis to the theory of intelligent design called the theory of evolution. Because no one was there at the formation of life, these two theories cannot be proven by the use of true scientific method (using the five senses). However, scientific method is not the only way to gain the truth. "For example, legal authorities recognize the validity of a prima facie case, which is acknowledged to exist when adequate evidence is available to establish the presumption of a fact that, unless such fact can be refuted, legally stands proven" (Jackson 13). With this in mind, the following evidence that will be presented is for p!ersonal evaluation. It is not to enforce beliefs on anyone, but only meant to spark thought processes that one may not have considered in the past. Teleology refers to the study of purpose or design. Applied to the to
The universe we live in is a contingent entity. This means that the universe itself cannot account for its own formation, and it is "contingent" because it depends on something outside of itself as the only logical explanation for its existence. "Logic requires that if something exists contingently, it must have a cause. That is merely to say, if it is an effect it must have an antecedent cause" (Jastrow 172). If one looks at the law of causality (every cause must have an effect, and every affect must have a cause) it includes in it the fact that the cause must be greater than or at least equal to the effect. This leads to two theories: 1. The universe created itself from nothing, or 2. The universe was created by something (or someone) that came before and is superior to the universe itself. To get a universe that has expanded as long as ours has (an assumption) without collapsing or having its matter coast away would have required extraordinary fine-tuning. A Chicago physicist calculated the odds of achieving that kind of precise expansion ... would be the same as throwing an imaginary microscopic dart across the universe to the most distant quasar and hitting a bull's eye one millimeter in diameter (Ham 57). Jackson, Wayne and Tom Carroll. "The Jackson-Carroll Debate on Atheism and Ethics," Thrust. Jerry Moffitt, no date. The remaining theory holds that something or someone created the universe. Therefore some assumptions must be made
