A detailed Summary of Cultural Heritage


Fighting in World War I and World War II, my grandfather and great-grandfather were fighting for more than American pride. They were fighting for more personal or cultural reasons. My family name is Derwinski and is of Prussian decent. The Germans and the Russians persecuted the Prussians. Prussians were strictly Protestants with high moral and ethnic standards. For centuries, Prussia was a safe haven for people persecuted for their religious beliefs. Between 1685 and 1715, 500,000 French Protestants (known as Huguenots) immigrated into Prussia. From this time on the Prussians started a culture that was time and time again attempted at being destroyed, but lived on.

Frederick II was known as The Great King of Prussia. His reign was from 1740-86, and was considered among the most notable of enlightened despots in 18th century Europe. Frederick was born in Berlin


Prussian wars date all the ways back to 1800. In 1815, Prussian armies and German armies crushed the last armies of Napoleon. (pommern) This in-turn was the first time Prussia had been recognized by the world. On July 19, 1870, France declared war on Prussia and lost their two most prominent cities (Alsace and Lorraine). Some considered Prussia as a pat of Germany, but originally it isn't. Prussia with 13 provinces was larger than Germany. Yet, on July 20, 1932 Germany illegally and forcefully annexed Prussia. Hitler, winning the election as the new Reich's-Chancellor, was thought to be raised in Prussia, but wasn't. He included Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Russia as what they called the Great German Empire.
