During and after World War 1 thousands of African Americans began migrating from the South. Many moved to the North in hoping for a better life and better jobs. By 1923 the population of Blacks in New York had tripled. Two-thirds of the blacks settled in Harlem, which was distinctively black. In 1917 there was an intellectual movement in Harlem known the Harlem Renaissance. It lasted to about 1935. Harlem became a vibrant center of black cultural activity in the 1920's. It gave birth to many musicians, artists, and many writers. A popular musical called Runnin' Wild sparked a new dance craze called the Charleston. The Cotton Club featured musician such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Bessie Smith. But above all the Harlem Renaissance was literary movement. It introduced such writers as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, who wrote Spunk. Sweat is a short story writing by Hurston during the Harlem renaissance. Sweat shows the treatment of women by men in the early nineteenth century. Delia Jones was a dedicated and loving wife. She worked hard all week to support her and her husband Skyes. Unfortunately, her husband did not do the same. He not attracted to her at all. When she was younger she was a beautiful woman,
The story is ironic. Mainly because Skyes want the snake to kill Delia but it ended up Delia's money, from doing laundry, to pay this lady rent and buy her things. His other woman wants him to get rid of Delia so they can move in the house together. Skyes knows that Delia is scared to death of snakes, so he catches himself a six-foot rattlesnake to scare her with. She comes home one night, and Skyes has planned to kill her with the snake. Afraid Delia begs him to remove the snake, but he does not. The next day the snake got free and killed him. but though years of hard working she become thin and scrawny. Skyes decides that she no longer looks as beautiful as she used to be; the years of hard work have taken their toll on her. Skyes no longer cares for Delia, and he is out trying to find himself a better, more physically "fulfilled" woman. He finds one and begins to parade around town with her. Skyes also uses country's elite class. It was a time when black men were regularly sentenced to death shows the way some African American men acted in Harlem. They tried to use the hustler game to get things free from women. Hurston demonstrates how slang was use in New York. These two men used nothing but slang when talking to each other and the woman. Hurston offers a window for people to look through if they did not live in Harlem. Her personal insight gives her readers a picture of Harlem that was real.
