Attwood portrays the government in the future much different than in Brave New World. The government is a totalitarianism government which is clear from the first chapter. A handmaid is a woman who goes into a home, usually of a high ranking official, to get pregnant because in this age of pollution and death many people are unable to procreate. The children of Gilead are a valuable commodity. Custody of a child depends not on birth rights, but on power and status of an individual. Natural childbirth is common in this society. Promiscuity is not natural and looked down upon in this society, except for the Handmaid who have to have lots of sex. The handmaids are also unable to have love and marriage because that are being sent to homes to make babies. Sex is found impersonal in Gilead. Gileadean philosophy has so rigidly represented feminine sexuality that even men are finding they do not enjoy it anymore, much less women. Undoubtedly, Aldus Huxly's Brave New World and Margaret Attwood's The Handmaid's Tale are both portraying the future in different ways. Through government, sex and dress code this is displayed. It shows no matter how perfect life may look, it is never perfect.

In Brave New World the society is based on rank and colour code which they have different interests. Epilson's are the lowest caste and they wear all black. They are unintelligent and unable to read and write. Deltas wear khaki which is dull and had no life. The deltas are conditioned to enjoy working on ground. The beta caste wears green coloured clothes which has a little more life and shows they are more fun and loving.

In Brave New World sex is one of the best things ever. Child sexuality in the past was repressed as an abnormal, immoral behavior through surveillance of children's activities.
