Rock and roll in the 1960s undertook some major changes. The style of music referred to, as rock and roll simply became known as rock during the 1960s. Many new artists came about during this time period that were instrumental in the development of a completely new generation. This period was an enlightenment to many young people who started experimenting with new things. Rock and roll has commonly been used to designate a range of popular music styles that flourished from the late 1940s to the mid 1960s. By 1966 and 67 new styles began to emerge that were different enough to be designated under the short term of rock (Koskoff 347). The popularity of this new form of music was second to none and it seemed that everyone young person in the country was into the movement. This is evident by Woodstock alone. On August 15,16, and 17th 1969, the Woodstock Music and Art Festival was held in Bethel, New York. Woodstock brought in many different kinds of people including protesters and just ordinary people looking to enjoy music. The organizers of this event were not sure how many people were going to show up for this event, but no one could have guessed that over 500,000 people would. There were traffic jams over twenty miles long leading into the grounds for the three day musical event (Barnes 1).
