Most modern romance novels of our time follow a typical path. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, and both live happily ever after. However, Dagoberto Gilb's Love in L.A. is an uncharacteristic love story which shows the reader something different. Love in L.A. is a story that describes how two unlikely people would meet each other. The characters of the story, Jake and Mariana, are very different people but each represents their sexes in a unique way. Jake in particular is an interesting guy that the author has to describe the "typical" L.A. citizen. He shows a wide range of attitudes that include con artist, innocent daydreamer, and secretive sadness.

The reader's first and easiest impression of Jake is the con artist. He shows this side of him the moment he and Mariana cross paths. For example, the instant he hits her Jake starts smooth talking her and giving a false impersonation of


Love in L.A. is a non-typical love story that shows the meeting of two noticeably different people. Mariana is the wary but at the same time gullible lady. Jake plays the typical L.A. man. However, he also shows more attitudes than just the norm. Jake is a con man, a innocent daydreamer, and a secretive sad man.

Although Jake is easily seen as just a con artist, he also shows indication of being an innocent daydreamer.
