Born August 14, 1851 in Griffin, Georgia. Came from a very well known family. Received his Doctor of Dental Surgery on March 1, 1872. He immediately opened up a practice in Atlanta. He soon discovered he had contracted tuberculosis. The prognosis gave him a few months to live, which might be extended if he moved to a dry climate. He headed West to Gleenwood Springs. He knew he didn't have much time to live and did not care if he lived or died. He was often drunk and stood for no challenges from men. The constant coughing made it difficult for him to practice dentistry, and it was soon apparent that he had a natural talent for gambling. A gambler had to be able to protect himself, so Holliday practiced constantly with his gun and knife. He had his first confrontation on January 2, 1875 with a saloonkeeper in Dallas. Neither man was hurt. Days later he had a violent fight with a distinguished citizen. He shot him twice, leaving him dead. The local law followed him close afterwards and he fled. In early October 1880, Doc had a confrontation with Johnny Tyler while in the Oriental Saloon. Johnny quickly left, but Doc and the saloon owner (Milt Joyce) began to argue. Doc was drunk and, therefore, his aim was off. Doc fired several shots, all of them missing their mark, and Joyce hit Doc on the head with his pistol. Joyce ended up with a shot through the hand, the saloon's arrested and charged for assault with a deadly weapon. He was found guilty of the charge and fined $20 plus $11.25 costs. Doc and Wyatt rode out of Tombstone in 1882. He returned to Colorado, where his health steadily got worse. On March 15, 1881 a stagecoach was held up and its driver and a passenger were killed. Doc beat Ed Bailey during a card game when bailey pulled a gun on him in Ft. Griffin. He was arrested, sprung from jail by "Big Nose" Kate, and fled to Dodge City.
