The Truth Behind Youth Violence and Why Crime Rates Continue to Increase

Rita Kramer's, " Juvenile Justice Is Delinquent", is a very well written argumentative essay that lacks only specific examples, or cases. Kramer does a great job at proving her point and arguing her view throughout her essay, by stating the obvious problems with the Juvenile Justice system, and using statistics to back up her thesis. However, more impact could have been added to the essay, catching the readers attention even further, if she would have mentioned at least one of the juvenile cases the courts have been faced with throughout the past year. One of these amazingly hard to believe stories, that have hit headlines and news stands everywhere, would have helped Kramer prove how dramatically violence committed by the youth has increased, and how serious it has become.

Kramer begins her essay very strongly, with a tone of frustration and anger toward the Juvenile Justice System. Referring to the Juvenile Courts Kramer states, "instead of solving societies ills, it has added to them". Right away Kramer states her thesis, and gives us a taste of her true feelings. She doesn't hold back, but instead she is straightforward and honest. When writing an

Toward the middle of her essay Rita begins to add statistics to help pursue you to take her side in the argument. Kramer states, " As recently as the early 70's, the majority of cases before children and family courts were misdemeanors... New York Cities most common charge was pick pocketing ... and between 1987 and 1991, the fastest - growing crime by juveniles was loaded gun possession." Adding these statistics was definitely a way to help pursue readers, however this is the point in the essay that the Calimbin story, for example, would have grabbed the reader's attention even more. The harsh brutal truth of how those adolescents took the lives of innocent bystanders, and the fact that more incidents have occurred since then, would have helped prove how bad youth violence really is and how ineffective our Justice System is at preventing these crimes.

police officer forgot to have him initial his responses to the Miranda in the proper place". Kramer then hits the reader with the reality of the consequences that these criminals must face when found guilty. She informs the readers that these harsh punishments, when they do happen, include " Eighteen months in a facility that usually has TV, a basketball court, and better food and medical care then at home". At this point in the essay Kramer's persona begins to become one of a persistent tone. She fires at you fact after fact, proving the fallacies of our Juvenile and Justice systems. Kramer's knowledge at this point helps, again, prove to her readers that our Juvenile system is ineffective. She reaches out to those who don't realize how recreational our so-called, "punishment" to criminals really
