Mambo
-Study of culture and contemporary practice-In this essay I am going to talk about some of the main artists that work at Mambo, I am also going to tell you about the style that they use for their illustrations. Mambo is an Australian surf and street wear company, which comes under the communication, and product area of design. It was founded in 1984 by Dare Jennings, whose dream of an international design and fashion empire was born out of the simple belief that almost any idiot could make a few dollars by sticking a picture on the back of a T-shirt and selling it. Reg Mombassa is one of the more famous artists in the company as he was also in a Australian rock band called "Mental as Anything". Reg is also a painter, writer, and poet, and he uses each of these skills in his cloths designs. Some other main very skilled, talented, and bizarre artists that do art work for the company are David McKay, Matthew Martin, Paul Worstead, Maria, Kozic, Jim Mitchell, Gerry Webb, Steve Bliss, Mark Falls, Robert Moore, Jeff Raglus, Marcelle Luman, and Bruce Goold. All but 3 of these artist were born in Australia which reflects in their work. Gerry Webb is the only one of these artists who is from Adelaide.
Mathew Martin is from Sydney. Mathew is a former Insurance broker's clerk, surfboard shaper, and employed by the Australian Army to dig holes. He is currently living in New York, contributing cartoons and illustrations to magazines and such as American HQ, the New York Times, Playboy, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Steve Bliss was born in London, and he is a decorator of almost every conceivable surface. He is a painter, art director, and artist. He illustrates magazines, designs CD covers, creates T-shirt and fabric art, and Camcorders and electronic games. For the production of the pictures that they use to put onto clothing, they use all kinds of media, from pencils to pastels, basically they use any kinds of media that they can use to draw or paint onto a flat surface and would have the appropriate effect for the illustration. Most of there clothing has a beach style so they usually use quite bright colours in there work. The shapes are very basic, and if you look at Picasso's work you can see some resemblances. Like the his work above on page 4. Mambo often use feral animals but the most used is a feral dog which is really stylized. The dog was drawn on the computer, as you can tell because it has no detail and it has smooth edges. The dog is usually doing offensive things but it is not just the dog, many other pieces of Mambo's work can also be very offensive. They can contain pictures and wordings which refer to sexual references. Marcelle Luman is a painter, graphic artist, short film, music maker, writer, and script editor. A lot of Mambo's work has been influenced by the famous artist Pablo Picasso. Picasso produced paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and ceramics. He was high
