Police Brutality: Totally Against Giuliani Police brutality has been a serious issue these past few years. It seems as if police officers are taking advantage of their power. There's a right way to handle things and the police officers today are definitely not doing it the correct way. They seem to have forgotten the procedures learned in Police Academy. The police officers are here to maintain our streets, not to cause chaos or confusion. Riots are mainly started because of the actions of the police. Police officers do things and most of the time they get away with it. This causes uproar in our communities. How much longer do we have to suffer before the government takes action? It all started in 1997, when a Haitian immigrant, Abner Louima was allegedly tortured by four cops. The four cops shoved a plunger into his rectum and mouth (Beals 1). Johnnie Cochran has expressed his outrage over police brutality by leading battles in the courtroom. It said that only 25 percent of blacks in 12 cities, including Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, were not pleased with the local police (31). I think it is ridiculous, how we have to cry out to our government so that they can do something about the deaths of many innocent people. The thing I most hate about this problem is that, the police are here to protect us and the only thing they are doing is killing us off one by one. "Black America In Uproar Over Police Brutality." Jet 28 June 1999 As far as, the Amadou Diallo Case, there is no reason why the officers had to shoot that man so many times. They claim they thought he had a gun. I understand the fear but 41 shots were not called for. It takes one shot to the knee or leg to make any human drop to their knees. Their whole
