Ecstasy
Ecstasy or MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a synthetic analogue of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), a psychoactive drug-possessing stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. First synthesized in 1912, by a German company possibly to be used as an appetite suppressant and became popular in the 1960's as the 'love drug' ("The Life Education Network", 2001). In 1941, the drug was tested as a relief for Parkinson's disease but dropped when one trial subject experienced rigidity of the muscles. At about the same time, the drug was dropped as an appetite suppressant because strange side effects were noted. By the 1970's ecstasy was used to facilitate psychotherapy by a small group of therapists in the United States. A number of psychiatrists came forth who had been quietly using MDMA not approved by FDA, was not illegal (Oakley, 1999) Until July 1, 1985, MDMA was not a controlled substance and was legally available for use. At that time, the Drug Enforcement Administration placed MDMA in Schedule 1 on an emergency basis, as a drug with high potential for abuse and without accepted medical use. It was claimed that the abuse potential of MDMA was proved by its widespread use. MDMA is reported
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Between 1998 and 1999, past year use of ecstasy rose by a third among tenth graders, and by 56 percent among twelfth graders. The greatest number of MDMA users fell into the 18-25 year old category with slightly greater than 1.4 million people reporting its use. Although no significant changes occurred in 1999 in the use of marijuana, amphetamines, hallucinogens, tranquilizers, or heroin, several significant changes in other drug use did occur including: In conclusion, in doing this report I really learned a lot about the drug MDMA or Ecstasy. While doing my research I ran across two (Dancesafe and Rave) web sites that sell Ecstasy testing kits for a donation of about $20.00 per kit. I can't believe California allows this to happen; it's promoting its use to all ages. They feel it will cut down on people taking the risk of getting bad drugs (I didn't know there was a good street drug). This is no more glorifying MDMA than handing out needles to heroin addicts; than I didn't see a difference between people dying or having bad reactions to the drug if they tested it because it isn't going to protect you really from having a stroke or cause some other human organ fail. These sites make the drug sound and look so good they look like kids vitamins or symbols appealing to adults but to me the last thing I would want to consume is a pill with VIP on it. Many people feel tired or depressed in the days immediately after taking MDMA. A lot of clubbers put the tiredness down to several hours of ballistic behavior on the dance floor, but fatigue is also a common after-effect for those who take pills at home. People who suffer post-MDMA depression generally find that it peaks three or four days after they have taken the drug. In a few cases, depression becomes a long-term problem, sometimes of a severe nature. · 8.7% (12 years and older have used hallucinogens The 1993 National Household Survey on
