To Be or Not to Be
To be, or not to be; that is the question: To live, or to die. This question unfolds the answer to the entire soliloquy. Hamlet was faced with a conflicting situation, which left him torn from avenging his father's murder. Hamlet's dilemma made him explore the many universal questions that are left unanswered about existence and death. In this soliloquy, Hamlet has exhausted every angle in his mind looking for answers about life and death. He feels life brought him too much pain and woe spiritually, mentally and physically. He questions if it is really worth being alive? Not only is he questioning suicide, but he also feels if he should wallow in his suffering or take action and face the great sorrows of the world. He says, "Tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune". The "slings and arrows" are the conflicts faced by Hamlet and the rest of the world. He feels no one really understands how he feels inside. He feels why does he have to keep all this pain inside feel all this remorse for people and life. He feels detached from the world for the reason that nobody understands him. He feels out of place in life and doesn't understand why he has to stay in this drea
es life, with all his torment and burdens, just to avoid death, the great unknown. Hamlet curses his fate for having been born at all. At the end of this soliloquy Hamlet's nobleness, morality and goodness has overpowered the struggle, which left him torn from avenging his father's murder. However, Hamlet feels guilt and cowardly, since he has allowed Claudius to live. He feels he has to gather all the facts, wait for the right moment and then he will be able to take action. It is human nature to feel cowardly and ineffective when one is unable to take action. Hamlet is not being a cowardly, but smart to wait and take decisive action. Although the play did end in a tragedy we still learned that life is what you make out of it. Maybe if Hamlet wasn't so caught up in the question "To Be or Not To Be" then he could have explored life to its fullest instead of waiting for death to come and allowing revenge to consume his whole life. It is human nature to question life and death, but when it becomes the only thing you think about, it is as if you stopped living, even before you die. However, Hamlet thinks and analyzes so much, he is never satisfied ned from the dead to report. Despite the fact that life can be treacherous. Hamlet foregoes suicide since the afterlife may be worse if he takes his own life. Hamlet rejects death but still welcomes spiritual relief provided by sleep.
