The story A & P theme is that people should live by the social expectations of life. In this story Sammy faces the conflict of his personal morals and the proper work ethic that he should maintain at the A & P. The conflict is important in this story in understanding the theme.
The conflict is simply that Sammy feels that morally his boss (Lengel) is embarrassing the girls and being rude to them. On the other hand Sammy has to maintain his work ethic. So the conflict in this story is Sammy's personal morals versus his Proper work ethic. This conflict begins when his boss embarrasses the girls repeatedly at the A & P. Lengel makes comments to the girls like "Girls this isn't the beach". Sammy feels that Lengel is acting immoral by treating the girls this way. Sammy has to maintain his proper work ethic, so he can say much to defend the girls.
When Sammy makes his way outside to the parking lot of the A & P he looks for the girls immediately, probably looking for some kind of gratification from the girls for defending them. He realized that the girls were already gone and they didn't wait for him. The girls that he defended, and was looking for some kind of gratification from didn't wait for him. So now Sammy is left in the parking lot of the A & P without a job, and without the girls he was hoping would wait for him.
"The girls, and who'd blame them where in a hurry to get out, so I say 'I quit' to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping that they will stop and watch me their unsuspected hero." Sammy stood up for the girls they only way that he knew how by quitting his job. His morals took over his work ethic
