1. Emile Durkheim believes that society exists externally and we all have the same idea( collective conscience). He distinguishes between two kinds of social unity: Mechanical solidarity, based on a moral consensus among people who have many social similarities and organic solidarity, based on mutual dependence among people of different backgrounds and beliefs.

Karl Marx is best known as an economist or historian, he has been called the most famous of sociologists. For Marx, society is and always has been fundamentally divided between two classes-the one that controls the means of production and the one that does not. Karl Marx also believes that material conditions create consciousness. It is not the consciousness of people that determine their being, but their social being determines their consciousness.

Max Weber defines sociology as "the science which aims at interpretive understanding (in German for Verstehen) of social behavior in order to gain an explanation of its causes, its course, and its effects." To Weber, this Verstehen can be achieved only by discovering the subjective meanings that individuals give to their own behavior and


The content analysis method uses documents as a data base. Sociologists apply this method to study the cultural values and social concerns of a particular group or society.

The quota sample-surveying a specified number of people with particular characteristics, such as first 1,000 people located who are over the age of 65.

Opportunity and quota samples are not truly random samples and should be avoided if possible, because the data they generate may not be representative of the total population.

4. A sample is a portion of a particular population.

The cluster sample- grouping individuals on the basis of common characteristics, such as certain grades in school, and randomly selecting respondents within each cultrue.

The oppurtunity sample-sampling whoever is available, like all people walking down a particular street or in a shopping mall on a certain day.

Field Studies, especially participant observation, entail the researcher's getting into the natural setting of subjects and carefully observing and recording their behavior.
