d-day

A single operation changed the outcome of the world's greatest war. Operation "Overlord" was designed to be the largest amphibious invasion in history. There are four major categories D-day can be divided into. How and where the actual invasion took place. The new advances in technology and the mistakes they caused. The results of this masterpiece of human intelligence. The need of the invasion and the politics are also an important factor of D-day.

The politics of the war almost go hand and hand with the need of the invasion. A lot of people felt that this invasion would be unsuccessful. Those people declared this "D-day" a waste of money and manpower. It was also felt that it originally should just be the United States and the British. This would eliminate the weakest part of the allies line the divisions between the separate countries. The politics of leaving the other countries out did not go over very well and they were added. Eisenhower and Churchill got along for the most part, not like Joseph Stalin the basic dictator of Russia. Stalin was even once quoted asking Churchill "When are you going to start fighting?" Stalin then asked, "Are you going to let us do all the work?" Hitler had his own top general even kill himself

The allies agreed that the Germans had to go down first.

Eisenhower was not going to loose this war in any cost. Eisenhower once was quoted while visiting Bradley Headquarters "This operation is not being planned with any other alternatives. This operation is being planned as a victory and that's the way it's going to be." Going into the invasion there was no plan for retreat. The only way out was through the German's guns. This was the only battle in World War history that the wounded had to be carried it the front lines in order for treatment. Eisenhower knew the importance in taking these beaches. If this would fail not only would it be a massacre of the Allies but the last offensive strike for the year. That would give Hitler time to construct a larger force and the technology of the Germans was progressing at a phenomenal rate. The fact that the Germans were first to have atom-splitting technology sent the United States into work on the "Manhattan Project".

e beloved General go. The loss of the beaches at Normandy led directly to the fall of Germany. Other Generals also reacted unsatisfactory to the heads of the powers.

The choice of the invasion had to be precise. The astrological calendar was first looked over and studied. The most feasible days for the Invasion came out to June 5, 6, or the 7th. The choice was also to do the invasion at low tide, contrary to Rommel's idea. The choice to do this was so that the tanks and heavy machinery could just drive up on the beach. Rommel thought if the Allies would go high tide in order to minimize the time on the beach. The beaches themselves had to be tested in order to see if the sand could be suitable for prolonged unloading operations. The beaches needed to let easy loading directly from the L.S.T's and have exits for vehicles and adequate road networking behind them for massive quick deployment inland. The Allies decided to actually get sand samples from the questionable beaches. The Allies sent Ogden smith and Scott Bowden. These two volunteered to go in a mini submarine to the beach later code-named Sword. This was in all actuality a suicide m!

a good plan if the troops would have been dropped off were they were supposed to. Instead they were miles off their target and the infantry had to deal with all the power of the Atlantic Wall in the morning. The British and the other Allied forces were given Gold, Juno, and Sword. The total front ended up being about a sixty-mile front across the French border called Normandy. The Allies felt it easier to go across the English Channel then anywhere else. The total artillery of men and vehicles were the following: 176,475 men, 20,111 vehicles, 1,500tanks, and 1,200 planes. Deception kept the Germans on their toes.

The allies realized the strength of the Germans and felt it best in order to get Stalin involved and to start a double front war to go right through Hitler's army. The United States had been secretly giving supplies to the British and the other countries fighting the Axis powers. This eventfully pulled the United States into the War after Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. The States declared war on Japan the day after and the Italy and Germany declared war on the United States on December 11th making this officially a World War. The invasion was set for June 6, 1944, now it was just how and where.

After this great action of bravery Ogden was quoted screaming while still off the coast "Happy New Year". After similar test where run on the other beaches, Omaha, Gold, Sword, and Juno was chosen. General Eisenhower over ruled Morgan and decided to extend the field of the invasion west. Despite the reports of the Atlantic Wall being at one of its greatest power points. That beach had thirteen-foot thick concrete walls under the Le Havre coastal guns, which were pointed across the beach instead of out to the ocean. The most formable of the beaches ended up being Utah. Both of these beaches were given
