IMAX Takes Us Undersea in the Galapagos

I did my report on “IMAX Takes Us Undersea in the Galapagos.” This was an amazing feat that these scientists accomplished. The Galapagos is located in the Pacific Ocean 100 yards off the coast of Marchena in the Ecuador. Although located on the Equator, strong ocean currents from the southeast bring in cold, nutrient-rich water, a large reason why the Galapagos has such lush marine life. A 40-odd-member crew of scientists set out for a month to film this 3D movie. Co-produced by the Smithsonian Institution and IMAX Limited of Toronto, the film first premiered at the National Museum of Natural History’s Johnson IMAX theater. The movie follows Smithsonian ichthyologist Carole Baldwin on her first visit to the Galapagos, the cluster of volcanic islands that straddles the Equator 600 miles off the Ecuadorian main land, made world famous by the brief visit of the English naturalist more than 150 years ago. The archipelago’s remoteness, its unique plants and !

Three-dimensional IMAX represents the latest leap in large-format filmmaking, technology that began in 1970 with the 2D IMAX now featured in science museums and movie theaters around the world. With its large frame, a single frame is closer in size to a playing card than to the postage-stamp-size frame of a Hollywood film.

Physicists at IMAX headquarters in Toronto calculated the buoyancy of the camera and its housing, and their findings were later tested with extensive pool work. To offset the buoyancy of the air trapped inside the metal armor, the camera is weighted inside and out. On the first time out it sank to the sea floor.

Perhaps the 3D experience will capture the power of the place for people who cannot get to the Galapagos archipelago themselves. In a sense, this film will let us experience what Darwin saw in those fateful long weeks.

The deaths of Aarchambault and Raisner, the challenges caused by El Nino, the difficulties of shooting underwater, and the pure raw experience of life and death in the Galapagos Island not only took i
