"The oldest sister of brothers is usually a strong, independent woman. She is down to earth and sensible, with a healthy ego, though she may at times appear self-effacing" (Richarson 40). First borns tend to be conscientious, well organized, serious, goal oriented, achieving, people pleasers, and believers in authority. Many first borns fit the description of "strong willed and aggressive." But there are plenty of first borns who are compliant. A compliant first born is someone who wants to please. Compliant first borns still have all those first-born qualities, but they're always in a very reliable and conscientious. In this paper I will be illustrating a compliant first born female, characteristics of a first born child, dealing with the birth of another child, and an oldest as a spouse, parent, friend and at work.

Compliant first borns tend to be good students and good workers because they started out with a very strong need for Mom and Dad's approval. Then, of course, they need the approval of other authority figures, such as: teachers, coaches, and bosses. I see myself as a please, a nurtures, and a caregiver, all classic characteristics of the com

Richardson, Dr. Ronald W. and Lois A. Birth Odrer & You. Canada: International Self- Counsel Press Ltd.,2000.

As mentioned earlier, anything first borns do is a big deal for everyone in the family. All this attention encourages first borns to achieve. Because family and friends take the first born seriously, he or she often develops greater confidence. As adults, oldest children usually have many parental qualities; they can be nurturing and protective of others and they are often able to handle responsibility well and assume leadership roles. "It's no wonder that first borns go on to become president of the club, the company, and even the country. While over 50 percent of U.S. presidents have been first borns or functional first borns, only three have been true babies" (Leman 89).

The usual reaction when the baby has been home for a few days is "Send that kid back where it came from" (Richardson 44). The oldest tries many ways of getting their parents attention. One of the common patterns of oldest children is that they try very hard to be good so that their parents will continue to love them rather than their "replacement." They become helpful with the baby in order to earn love. They give up trying to get what they want for themselves and do what the parents want. Their parents naturally appreciate the new cooperativeness of the oldest and reinforce it by telling the oldest that he or she is bigger and smarter than the newborn and therefore superior. Even though the newborn now gets most of the parents' attention, the oldest gets their approval for being whatever they mean by good, quiet, tidy, responsible, helpful, nurturing, grown-up.

Oldests have had the experience of always being the leader of the other children in the family and are used to being the best at everything and having the most power with siblings. Therefore, they are used to being able to say, even demand, what they want and will more often be confrontational than manipulative. "Just as they ended up being loyal to their parents, they will be loyal to other people in their life and except loyalty from others" (Richarson 54). Often, the merely independent of actions of others seem like a betrayal to oldest children who may have been surprised and hurt
