In April of 1999, there was a tragic moment in the United States of America. Around 11:30 A.M. in Littleton, Colorado, two young man entered into Columbine high school and started shooting their weapons among the students there. Many people were shot and killed, while others were wounded. Among the victims were students, faculty, and even the two shooters who committed suicide. I found two articles pertaining to this incident in the Chicago tribune and the Post-tribune. The Chicago tribune was just a summary of the event, while the Post-tribune had interviews of police officials, and student reactions to what had happened. The functions of the mass media that I will be talking about are: Information and Surveillance, Agenda Setting and Interpretation, Connective Links, Socialization and Transmission, Persuasion, and Entertainment. Information and Surveillance that I found in both of the articles were that the death tolls, and the amount of people injured in the attack were different. In the Chicago tribune they did not mention how many people were killed, but the did say that six-teen people were wounded. In the Post-Tribune they said that twenty-five people were feared dead, and at least twenty people were injured. Another dif
g stereotypes when selecting friends. Socialization and transmission in this case, is that the people now can talk about how to end school violence. The violence in school settings has been on the rise and it does not seem like are government is doing anything to stop it. This is a big concern with me because I have a younger brother in high school and at anytime in the day someone can just walk in and do as they please. Something else people can talk about is how to help troubled student from committing crimes, which may lead to school violence. In this article there are lots of things that can be talked about, but more importantly it brings people together to solve a problem that is on the rise. The articles deal with persuasion, especially in the Post-Tribune article. The article has students saying that the two gunmen were "jerks" or the also have them saying that they were "strange." The article really built up the violence in this event. They say people were hanging out ! was that the media wants us to recognize that school shootings have been on the rise. President Clinton was quoted saying "Perhaps now America will wake up to the dimensions of this challenge, if it could happen in a place like Littleton." The article really wants the readers to know that this can happen anywhere, maybe even in their own home town. The connective links in the two articles are that the gunmen were out to get the minorities and athletes of the school. The two students were outcasts and belonged to a clique called the "Trench Coat Mafia." The article suggested that the motive was retaliation because the students were sick of being outcasts to other people. Connective links really helps in this article because know people may start realizin
