Western female thought through the centuries has identified the relationship between patriarchy and gender as crucial to the woman's subordinate position. For two hundred years, patriarchy precluded women from having a legal or political identity and the legislation and attitudes supporting this provided the model for slavery.

The division of labor among men and women is based on separation and subordination and also related to the relationship between man and nature. The rise of science and technology strained the relationship of mankind and Mother Earth. The abandonment of nature lead to the rise of dualism with women and eventually the polarization of both.

The first example of exploitation can be seen via the Europeans. The conquering of North and South America and the Asian peninsula released the men from their dependence on


the women of Europe. The removal of the previous inhabitants of the Americas lead to the origin of slave labor on the "plantation." Thus, the progress of the European comes from exploiting their women, exploiting nature, and exploiting other groups of peoples and their lands.

Regardless of the refusal of key patriarchal institutions to acknowledge the extent to which man have been and are systematically privileged by their structures and actions, these dominant forms of power can help produce social change, even if they are only attempting to keep in touch with contemporary society. The process of power is therefore open to change and the Marxist philosophy has shown using their account of patriarchy that the inequality and discrimination can be mediated by the institution which represents it.
