Over the past decade extensive medical research had been done in an effort to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. There have been a number of attempts in congress for a bill to be passed legalizing this drug. However congress has yet to pass the bills proposed. Will legalization of marijuana help or hurt society? The substantial argument supporting the legalization of marijuana lies behind medical research. However studies show that "marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug for recreational purposes predominantly amongst adolescents ages fifteen to early twenties (Zimmer 46)." The effects of marijuana are far from positive. Legalizing marijuana for medical purposes will only make the drug more easily accessible to those using for recreational reasons.

Though tests have proven marijuana has relieved those suffering illnesses, through more research a different drug could be produced for the same effect. The THC in marijuana is what relieves the symptoms, not the entire plant. If a legal drug could be created using just THC, that would be acceptable. This would eliminate the harmful effects of smoking marijuana. Due to the list of possible negative health effects and increasing addiction statistics marijuana should remain illegal.
