FOUR DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO ART

Wolfgang Laib, with his modern sculptures, catches the viewer attention to look art differently. That is because that he uses very natural but extremely time consuming materials to deal, which also serve his concepts that impermanence and the moment. In addition, his simple sculptures carry the mystical rituals of the east, create the theatricality of Minimalism.

His attention to simplicity starts with moving to a modernist glass house in the middle of a vast meadow surrounded by forest. His family's "pared-down" style is also reflected in the works: "the Laibs slept on futons and ate their vegetarian meals sitting on the floor. This extreme simplicity and orientation to the floor would later become important elements in Laib's work"(1). Relating to this effect, there is another thing determines his materials. The placement of his house allows him to collect natural substances like pine, dandelion and hazelnut pollens, and also beeswax, stone, marble, milk and boulder.

The shapes of the sculptures and the way of exhibiting them are very close to Minimalist sculptures. He uses modest and simple shapes. However, Laib's theatricality in his works is another issue. The spectators come into his wor

Zoe Leonard is another installation artist, but her works are related to the concept of nostalgia and resolve, and commonly she use dolls and old objects as materials.

Wolfgang Laib, Martha Rosler, Zoe Leonard and Lee Krasner are very different artist that they have own way of studying and working styles. Their materials changes according to their concepts. However, Laib's and Krasner's works can put together because their lives influenced their working courses. The primitiveness both on Laib's sculptures and Krasner's paintings are easily caught. From another side, Laib's sculptures' silence meet with Leonard's installations which keep this silence again. Although Rosler's concept of feminism matches with Leonard's babydolls and suitcases, Rosler's direct attack differentiates her installations from others.

She was affected by surrealism and cubism first. Then she worked with Pollock and used "psychic automatism", the surrealist technique, that "doodles were used as a liberating device to outwit the conscious mind" (5).

Another powerful concept is international politics. She has used photomontage for the work "Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful"(1967-72).

If we put her woks together there are two concepts. One lies on her feministic approach and other is oldness that refers to nostalgia. As a contrast to political art, she is sentimental. Her objects have soft and silent images. Moreover, her criticism is not as strict as Rosler's examination on femininity. She is dealing with the noise by expressing low but clear voice.

She also depicted the symbols of tribal and prehistoric cultures. Thus, her works are like the mixture of art
