Juvenile Crime
It is my belief that juvenile crime is a problem that needs a lot of attention. I don't think that we need to pay attention to it because of growing numbers, but I think that we need to pay attention to it because it is a problem that can be solved just by a little extra effort. Too many people are quick to say that the problems caused by juvenile crime is directly related to the juvenile. What about their surroundings. I believe that there are definitely some juveniles who have committed crime just for the cause of committing a crime. There are also some children who are committing crimes that are truly doing it out of necessity or are just troubled. One step I think that society could take towards preventing some of these juveniles from committing "unnecessary" crimes is an idea that I saw in one of our readings, "Peace in the Streets". Geoffrey Canada suggests that we try our hardest to "reduce the prevalence of domestic and child abuse and neglect"(Goshgarian p474). There are too many children seeing their parents fight in the home. First, if a child sees their parents beating on eachother, they will copy it. Think about when you were a child, you copied and did what you parents did. I am not saying that
Another suggestion I have is not a precautionary suggestion, but rather something that we can do when the child has already been involved in juvenile crime. These children need second chances that a lot of people are not willing to give. I found another interesting fact that has to do with this in our book.. In the essay "Cruel Punishment for Juveniles", the authors quote another essay that brings up a very interesting fact, "Most youthful wrongdoers do not become adult criminals"(Goshgarian p486). This is the total opposite of what society believes, they believe that once a child has been started down the path of crime, that there is no turning back. In some cases, yes, but for the majority, no. Rehabilitating these juveniles once they have committed the crime is the most important part. Most children do know what they did was wrong, but a never given a chance to prove it. They are just thrown back into the mix. he news, where police find 5 kids living in a house with nearly any food, because the mother works for 2 days in a row. Now this isn't going to cause a child to commit crimes, but the environment eventually will. If a child doesn't have a structured home life, and can do whatever he/she wants, than this can cause chil
