fahrenheit 451

A detailed Summary of fahrenheit 451

Consider living in a society, as in the novel Fahrenheit 451, where everyone is deprived of many privileges that one might be used to in the American society, and then to discover that these two societies have many similarities. Ray Bradbury, a popular science fiction author of the mid 1900's, creates a censored society in his novel. As the reader explores the people and practices of this absurd society he is forced to question the ideals and direction of his own personal American society. Although the American society may seem much more normal than the society in Fahrenheit 451, when one thinks about the negative issues of that society, many of them resemble the same negative issues we encounter. The reader discovers through the comparison of these two societies that the strong influence of technology, the negative affects of censorship, and the increasing use, popularity, and dependency of drugs are similar in both societies.

The negative affects of censorship are demonstrated in both societies as well as the negative issues surrounding the use of drugs. Through the comparison of societies, one is brought to evaluate not only his personal quality of life, but also the direction and progress his own society is taking and whether or not this is positive or negative.

consequences. Mildred began taking pills to help her sleep and she became addicted. In our society, a simple medicine like nasal spray can cause an addiction much like Mildred's case. In the novel drug use became so widespread that sometimes their society forgot the seriousness of its affects. As a consequence of this they had paramedics who weren't even professionals going around saving everyone from their drug overdoses. "You don't need an M.D., case like this; all you need is two handymen, clean up the problem in half an hour"(15). When the paramedics came to help Mildred after her overdose they acted very calm and loose because of the many times they had dealt with situations such as this. In our society people also forget the seriousness of the affects of drugs. Some drug users start off with simple things like aerosol sprays and later find they are addicted too much more serious
