Sophi Caco lives with her aunt in a small village called Croix-des-Rosets in Haiti. She lives in a small two-room house and sleeps with her Aunt Atie. Sophis' mother lives in New York City. Sophi does not remember her mother much, she left when she was a small child.One day Sophi came home from school and Atie was waiting on the steps of their house with a sad expression on her face. Atie told Sophi that her mother has sent for her. She will be leaving for the Americas in two days. Sophi at only nine years of age did not understand. The next morning Atie took Sophi to say goodbye to her Grandma Ife¢. When they arrive Atie decides she will stay with Grandma Ife¢ while Sophi is in the Americas. The next morning Atie takes Sophi to the airport where a brown skin woman with black hair and pretty eyes greets her. She tells Sophi that she will take her to her mother. When Sophi arrives in the Americas a pale, skinny, women with short black hair approaches her. The women picked her up and flung her into the air while smothering her in kisses. Sophis' first day of school was hard she had to walk past all the Americans that would mock her and tell each other that all Haitians were smelly and didn't bathe. Sophis' mother had high expectations, and she did not believe in sex before marriage. She wanted Sophi to become a doctor and bring honor to their family. Sophi left home that night with Joseph, because she felt as though she did not belong. Her and Joseph moved to Provence and had a baby girl named Briggitt. When Briggitt was twelve months old Joseph went on a music trip so Sophi went to Haiti to see her family. When she arrived at her old home her Grandma Ife¢ and Aunt Atie greeted her with excitement. When Sophis' mother found out that she was there she took the first flight there. While she was in Haiti Sophi and her mother made peace and became friends. Sophi returned home to Haiti to attend her mothers' funeral and to mend her broken heart. While she was there she learned that "I came from a place where breath, eyes, and memory are one, a place from which you carry your past like hair on your head." Sophi decided to tell her mother about her new friend, but before she could even finish her mother interrupted her by saying that American men are no good and that she will not see one. That night Sophi went to Josephs' house and accidentally fell asleep. When she went home it was late and her mother was in the kitchen waiting, with a furious look on her face.
