Mina Rees

Mina Spiegel Rees was born on August 2, 1902, in Cleveland, Ohio. At this time, Theodore

Roosevelt had been the president for approximately a year. Shortly after her birth the Rees

moved to New York City, where Mina grew up and attended public school. She spent her

teenage years going to the Hunter College High School, where she graduated valedictorian in

1919. After high school Mina went on to Hunter College, there she majored in mathematics,

graduating summa cum laude in 1923. Mina was very lucky to be able to go to college because

of the women's suffrage going on at this time. During this period, she was also holding down a

part-time job teaching for the mathematics department in the college.

Following Rees graduation, she taught at the Hunter College High School, all the while

working on her master's degree at Columbia University. At the time she got an interview for
