In this essay I will be discussing four of the major themes in this course in terms of progress, they will be religion, humanism, individualism and secularism. I will discuss these concepts within the countries of England, France, and Russia, and show my point of view on each. Religion was very dominant throughout the early history in England, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries. This started to change during the late 17th century, when people started focusing more on human reason rather than religion. One of the reasons that people started losing their faith in the church is because of how the bishops were picked, and how the church itself was generally deteriorating; they weren’t changing at all with the times. This allowed more religions to come forth, such as Calvinism. Most people turned to their country or state for their dominant influence in their lives. In the early 19th century to the early 20th century, Britain removed religious and political restric!tions from Dissenters and Catholics accepting them as citizens with equal rights. And as well, over this period of time, the influence of religion decreased even more so, especially with the governments. In the last 50 years, most churches are now voluntar
ce. But in Russia, the socialists argue that too much individualism was harmful to society. Liberals such as Jeremy Bentham agreed that when greater rights for some cause greater misery for many, like in the factories in the Industrial Revolution, then the government must intervene. To socialists, society must be reorganized to consider the good of the many even if this means restricting or qualifying individual rights. Individualism in the 19th to 20th century has drastically changed the ways of women. They have finally gotten the right to participate in government and the right to vote unlike in earlier times where it was just the adult males (Manhood Suffrage). The right to be treated as an individual rather than part of a group, especially one that may be subject to discrimination, has been strengthened by the appointment of ombudsmen and human rights commissions. Even though all these changes have occurred that has made individualism so much better, there are still strong! threats towards it. The government is still the major facilitator of social justice that has led to increased responsibility for and regulation of the lives of citizens, particularly in such fields as the welfare state and taxation. The globalization of economics and the development of global corporations have reduced the importance of the individual. But in the sphere of the Western Civilization and countries influenced by it, societies are tending to become more alike through the influence of the mass media and the pressures of education, employment and the role of the state. I believe that it is a good thing the way that individualism has gone, more freedom then we used to have in the 16th century. But even though we pay taxes to the government, it doesn’t hurt our individualism, those taxes are there so we all pay for our roads and many other things. I don’t believe that socialism is good because they infringe upon people’s rights, but that is because I ! in Italian affairs in the Crimean War and in Mexico. After Napoleon’s collapse, the Third Republic was hostile to the influential role of the Catholic Church played in French politics and introduced sharply anti-clerical legi
