311 HISTORY

The strikingly genius band, 311, is a vision of illumination peeking past the dark cloud cast on the music industry. They have certainly worked hard for all that they have achieved. Would you like to know what it is like to become an extreme musical underground success and all the hard work it takes to be exactly where you want to be? The history of the band, 311, has the answers to these questions.

All the members of 311 grew up in the ultra-hip era, the seventies, in Omaha, Nebraska. Timothy Mahoney, Chad Sexton, and Nicholas Hexum lived on the West Side and they all went to Westside High School with each other. Aaron "P-nut" Wills and Douglas "SA" Martinez lived on the South side and both went to Bryan High School together. (ETSD Video)

In high school, Tim and Nick were in a band called The Eds, which was named after the drummer, ED. Their songs and music were made up of the original songs and covers by eighties bands like REM, The Cure, and The Smiths. At this time Nick and Chad were also playing in the high school concert jazz band together. (ESTD Video)

When Nick was seventeen, he graduated early from school (he was very advanced) and moved to downtown Los Angeles in pursuit of a musical career. When Nick came back to Oma

The guys rented out a small house in Van Nuys on Macapa Street. They all lived here together. These were pretty lean times, that they mostly spent practicing their music, playing a little basketball, and unsuccessfully growing marijuana. Also, there was a lot of pasta eating and TV watching going on. Then, just before the band disintegrated into poverty, they were signed by Capricorn-Records. Everything was copacetic. (ETSD Video)

311 then began recording their next album. It was recorded at The Hive Studios from June 1998 through June 1999. After a year, the long awaited "Soundsystem" hit the shelves of record stores across America in August 1999. (Spin Magazine Website)

Some of this paper may not make much sense to someone who is not a 311 fan, or even another human being, for that matter, but it makes sense to me. I hope that I have inspired my readers in some way, though 311, to live out their own dreams. The members of 311 are great role models, and I'm happy that my generation has someone positive to look up to. Thank you 311.

ha a year later for Chad and Tim's graduation, the three guys got together for a jam session, and that's when the original 311 sound, Omaha Stylee, was born. (ETSD Video)

311 released a CD in October of 1998 titled "Omaha Sessions", which is a collection of 311 material written and recorded between 1988 and 1991. "Omaha Sessions" is the best of early day 311 and is only available though the 311 web-site merchandise page and the 311 mail-order catalog.

At first, they named the band Unity. At that time, they had a keyboardist named Ward Bones AKA Bones. In 1988 and 1989, Chad, Nick and Bones packed up and moved to Hollywood and tried making an unsuccessful stab at getting a record contract. (ETSD Video)

In July of 1994, 311 released a second album called "Grassroots". By this time they were on the road constantly and touring non-stop. They moved out of their small home in Van Nuys, put their belongings into a storage space, and to put it literally, just lived on the road. By putting all of their energy onto their live shows, they developed an overwhelmingly incredible Grassroots following. (ETSD Video)

To me, 311 is an inspiration. They have taught me to never give up, no matter what life throws my way.
