Language expands your mind and your world. The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, "The limits of my language are the limits of my world." Barbara Mellix might think that Wittgenstein said this merely because of his race and whereabouts. Mellix is a black woman who grew up in the south. She believes that she that the world has her bound and there is a limit to how far she can carry her race and expression. Although Wittgenstein was a white male, he would still be limited to whom he could communicate with due to geographical location and heritage. Richard Wright might interpret Wittgenstein's quote to say with out communicating with all types of people in the world, you are limited to how much knowledge of the world you can obtain. Wittgenstein's saying expresses everyone's opinion about the saying itself in eleven words.

Wittgenstein's approach to language was philosophically mathematical. He said the fundamental truths of arithmetic are nothing more than relatively stable ways of playing a particular language-game. "Wittgenstein transformed the nature of philosophical activity in the English-speaking world." From two seperate approaches, he showed that traditional philosophical problems can be avoided by using an appropriate methodology. Barbara Mellix wanted to find a method to break free from language barrier. She struggled throughout school with her writing and didn't know how to express herself so that a white person speaking "White English" could understand her. Not only did she attempt to master the language she went on to teach the subject. Self understanding of where she came from and the struggle she had to make helped Mellix in her teachings.
