There has been a constant increase in the amount of school violence in recent years. Beginning with the shootings at Columbine High School there has been great emphasis placed on protecting students from another event like this. Unfortunately, Columbine seems to have been only the beginning; there have been a number of school shootings recently. The main question to be answered is what to do about this increase in school violence. Some schools have implemented the zero-tolerance policy and yet some others believe in a less harsh method. The zero-tolerance policy makes precise and harsh consequences for anyone planning, saying, or writing about a shooting or killing. The zero-tolerance policy as well as other methods of preventing violence can work to prevent future school violence from occurring if it is followed strictly and enforced in every school around the country. It will be a long and strenuous process but something needs to be implemented or the violence will n!

Statistics have shown in the past that schools have been the safest place for a child to be but are we still sure that it true today? Every time there is an act of violence in the school more kids are becoming afraid to go to school. Everybody has the right to have an education in a safe environment where they are not in danger. The violence that occurs in schools has caused the environment to be a danger to the students. This shows that school violence is out of control and something has to be done. School violence is probably one of the biggest problems in today's society. School violence is a widespread issue that everyone realizes but not everyone is doing something to help prevent it.

In the past three years several school shootings have taken place. The first was on February second 1996, in Moses Lake, Washington. Barry Loukaitis opened fire in his algebra class, killing 2 students and a teacher. There was another shooting on February ninth in 1996. The shooting took place in Bethel, Alaska, which killed the principal and a student. There were three more shootings in 1997 including the shooting in Pearl Mississippi on October first where two students were killed and seven were wounded by a sixteen-year-old boy.
