Savage Inequalities by Kozol

Everyone has a specific image of school and all that school implies. I have always pictured a clean red brick building with fine trimmed green grass, flowers lining the walk ways, and lot's of playground equipment. Inside, colorful pictures line the walls, teachers smile as cheerful students line up to go to gym class, laughter and learning are visible throughout the school. However, after reading Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol, I realize how unrealistic my image of school and education is, well at least for all children. Sadly, some children do not even have a faint glimmer of hope at having a quality education. The American dream is one for the middle class white society. I always took for granted that there would be enough textbooks for each student, that there would be new technology and fully equipped science labs, and most importantly that each child has a chance to learn and succeed. Clearly I have taken a lot for granted. So many of America's children, primarily lower class minorities, have little hope to become something great. America's dream obviously does not include these children, otherwise something surely would have been done to make circumstances more fair. Although this book is based upon schools in 1989 and 199
